Find the Right Children’s Dentist in Farmington CT

April 14, 2016

childrens dentist in farmingtonFor an excellent children’s dentist in Farmington, you don’t have to look farther than the professionals you already trust with your own smile! Dr. Thomas G. Peters and the whole team at Farmington Valley Dental are passionate about caring for all the smiles in our community — including the very smallest.

Your Children’s Dentist is at Farmington Valley Dental

Children should visit the dentist around the time their first tooth erupts, with regular, twice-annual checkups beginning around their first birthday. Aside from helping to prevent tooth decay and other issues, these visits are key to putting your child on the road to a lifetime of good dental care.

As your child gets older, his regular checkup and cleaning won’t look much different from your own. He’ll receive the following at this six month visit.

  • A thorough cleaning for the removal of plaque and tartar buildup
  • A visual exam from Dr. Peters to check for cavities and healthy gums
  • X-rays to catch evidence of problems that may be lurking beneath the surface
  • Dental sealants and fluoride treatments for extra protection against decay
  • Helpful tips for improved oral hygiene at home

We can also provide sports mouth guards for little athletes, and make orthodontic recommendations as needed. And if your little one experiences significant jitters while in the dental chair, we have nitrous oxide (laughing gas) available to make any necessary treatments go as smoothly as possible.

Special Preventive Measures for Protecting Young Smiles

We’ve got two extra measures we will take to protect your little one’s teeth from decay: dental sealants and fluoride treatments.

Dental sealants are thin protective coverings that are painted directly onto the surface of the molars. They work by shielding the pits and fissures of the back teeth from the acids that cause decay. Cavities are most common between the ages of 6 and 14, so we’ll recommend dental sealants be placed early for maximum protection. It’s a quick, painless treatment that significantly reduces the risk for tooth decay.

We’ll also evaluate your child’s need for a fluoride treatment at his six month checkup. Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel to prevent the development of cavities, and the treatment takes just a couple of minutes following the cleaning.
